What does sustainability really mean?

“Meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising those of the future generation”

This is the official definition of sustainable development, sustainability is a constantly changing concept, it implies constant, preferably growing, environmental, social and economic well-being and the prospect of leaving future generations with a quality of life no less than the current one.

On 25 September 2015, the UN signed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: the program of action for people, planet and prosperity; made up of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which in turn include 169 distinct goals that concern all countries and all individuals, without excluding or leaving anyone behind along the path necessary to achieve global sustainability.

“This program does not solve all problems but it represents a good common basis from which to build a different world.”

  • Social
  • Environmental
  • Economic

Equalitas is a European certification brand that responds to the needs of the wine sector that can no longer be postponed: first of all, adopting a shared, objective and certifiable scheme by a third party therefore marks the path towards real, tangible and above all measurable sustainability.

Certification puts us in a position to continually improve by demonstrating, through annual checks by qualified auditors, the progress made in the cellar year after year.

ciclo del vino

Wine production cycle

This is how the new production cycle was born, imagined and recorded on channels of maximum harmony with an idea of growth and development capable of combining with what is the real need for progress to be practiced for the good of each and every one, for each level of the production path:

The steps for the creation of a wine can be described as a production cycle that starts from the harvest and ends in the bottle. Implementing the actions that result from existing conditions is a complex operational process, especially for a cooperative.

The first step was to select the members with the most suitable vineyards for the end product; the future objective is to carry out active and passive activities useful for understanding the delicate interrelationships between climate, soil and grape variety.

The production cycle comprises four important areas: energy consumption, water consumption, commitment of raw materials and supplies, generation of waste and secondary raw materials.

consumi energetici idrici

Energy Consumption

Energy consumption is mainly attributable to the consumption of electricity for the operation of the machines and for cooling the wines and environments. The energy supply comes from the national grid and from a proprietary photovoltaic system. Consumption has been optimized by replacing all halogen lamps with LED lamps. The objective is to increase the number of kW produced, with a new photovoltaic system.

Water Consumption

The water used for processing is purified where a part is reintroduced as waste water and another small part is used to irrigate the green areas. Water is involved in numerous activities in the production process, from sanitizing the cellar to washing the equipment and rinsing the bottles. Approximately 90% is taken from wells and undergoes an osmosis treatment, while the remaining 10% is taken from the aqueduct.

materie prime

Raw Materials and Supplies

Some years ago, Gotto d’oro decided to embark on a path towards sustainability and opt for recyclable materials as much as possible. We started with the purchase of natural cork stoppers and the new Settantacinque75 Line aims to extend this concept also to labels and cartons through the use of FSC-certified paper.

Waste Generation

Wine production involves the generation of different types of waste, which undergo daily controls at the winery. Non-hazardous waste consists of mixed packaging, glass, paper, cardboard and sludge from the treatment plant. The winemaking process generates raw materials, such as the grape stems, skins and seeds, which are sold to the distillery for the production of grappa.

We Respect the Environment
through Concrete Measures

Gotto d’oro obtained the A.U.A. (Single Environmental Authorization) because it was able to manage the production cycle from the vineyard to the bottle in compliance with all existing regulations, and will continue to do so in the future.

Work development must comply with safety regulations, environmental protection and the mutualistic values of the cooperative. We have paid special attention to production aspects, with new heat production systems (hot and cold) and cutting-edge equipment.

certificato CO2

Recycling of
cork stoppers

The release of the new Settantacinque75 Line for which we use sustainable materials, from the lighter glass bottles and FSC-certified paper labels and cartons to the 100% recyclable cork stoppers, marks the beginning of our participation in the “Ethical Project”, a new model of circular economy for the collection of any type of cork stopper. Gotto d’oro will be the cork stopper collection point for all the Castelli Romani. A non-profit organisation will then be appointed to pick up the stoppers and will receive from “Amorim”, historic producer of stoppers, € 700.00 per ton collected.

certificato CO2

BRC Food certification

The BRC Global Standards is a world-leading certification standard, used in over 60 countries and its Food Safety standard is one of the most widespread food safety certifications. The standard establishes the requirements for managing food safety at all stages of production and distribution. The BRC Food certification allows us to produce GDO – large-scale retail trade – branded products or export them internationally.

IFS FOOD certification

The IFS Food standard examines products and production processes to assess a food manufacturer’s ability to produce safe, authentic and quality products in accordance with legal requirements and customer specifications. It helps us meet the market’s growing demands for transparency and traceability and helps improve product integrity and increase efficiency.

ISO 9001:2008 certification

ISO 9001:2008 represents the worldwide reference for the certification of the quality management system of organizations in all production sectors and of all sizes.
The system allows you to govern company activities through the correct planning of internal resources, while triggering a process of continuous improvement, with a significant reduction in non-conformities.
